EXPERIMENTAL CAMPAIGN APRIL 2021

The Heritage Within team has undertaken the second on-site experimental campaign between the 26th and 30th of April at the Archaeological Museum of Carmo.

In order to gather more data with the ultrasonic tomography and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) inspections, this time applied on the second and third columns in the north side of the main nave of the convent. The automatic acoustic tomography system developed by the CSIC/UPM has been improved since the last campaign, especially regarding the water refilling system.

Indeed, the GPR documentation also collected more information by making horizontal inspections in the columns, thanks to a shape adapter designed specifically for that purpose.

Aside from documenting all the processes, numerous architectural details and parts of the convent have been photographed, to later be used to create photogrammetric models to improve the final reconstruction. That includes the sacristy, inner chapels, and the west facade.

Interestingly enough, an outside sculpture that originally belonged inside the convent of Carmo, the “Virgem de Piedade” has also been documented by visiting the “Ordem Terceira de Nossa Senhora de Monte do Carmo” where it currently rests; thanks to their help, this art piece will be included in the final project.
